Nursing bras – great for breastfeeding AND pregnancy

Let’s get one thing straight – I LOVE me some nursing bras. I haven’t breastfed in years but I still wear a lot of my nursing bras because they are so dang comfy!

It’s no secret that most women’s boobies grow quite a bit during pregnancy. Nursing bras have a magical way of stretching JUST enough (but not too much) to accommodate those pregnancy boobs.

What’s so special about nursing bras?

Everything! No just kidding, this girl actually LOVES a good ol’ regular bra too! But nursing bras are special mainly because of their comfort, ability to stretch, and all the handy little features that help make breastfeeding a little easier!

Differences between nursing bras and regular bras

  1. Fancy hooks: this is the MAIN difference in my opinion! Nursing bras have hooks on the top part of the strap for easy boob access! There is a strap that still connects the bottom part of your bra to the top, but the cup is easily un-hookable
  2. Elasticity: nursing bras are meant to conform to your growing boobs! This means, nursing bras are MUCH more elastic than regular bras. In fact, if you are finding your nursing bras aren’t stretching to your needs, get some new ones
  3. Underwire is gone: at least it is in most nursing bras. Some nursing bras do sport underwire, however research has shown that underwire can affect milk supply, so MANY companies opt out of it
  4. Extenders: YAS. Many nursing bras have bra extenders that are sold together or separately…breastfeeding boobies have a tendency to grow

When should I buy a nursing bra?

Well, I personally bought a pack while I was pregnant! My boobs didn’t change TOO much during pregnancy, but I decided to purchase early, so I could wash them and wear them a few times before I was using them full-time.

I really don’t like buying bras. All too often I’m disappointed by a weird fit, a weird tag I didn’t notice, or just the overall shape being different from when I bought it in the store.

I decided I didn’t want to deal with any of that so I bought a few nursing bras around my 8th month of pregnancy. Luckily the ones I bought were super comfy and didn’t really need any breaking in.

Speaking of fitting, here’s a great article by Kindred Bravely on how to properly size yourself for a nursing bra!

How many nursing bras should I get?

I would start out with 2-3 styles. Grab a regular bra (or bra set) to wear for daytime and one for sleeping. Once you find a brand that you like, order a few more to avoid having to do laundry alllll the time.
